On April 27, 2004, DigitalGlobe's QuickBird satellite collected a submeter image (right) of the train disaster site at Ryongchon, North Korea, five days after two trains exploded. Initial reports indicated that the trains, one carrying petroleum and the other liquefied natural gas, collided. But North Korean government sources have been quoted as saying the explosion was triggered when the train carriages carrying dynamite came into contact with a live power cable. According to the Red Cross, the blast killed at least 54 people and injured 1,200. The incident reportedly happened nine hours after North Korean leader Kim Jong-il passed through the station on his way home from a visit to Beijing. QuickBird collected the image at left on May 13, 2003.
